Welcome to the Columbus Community Page!
Columbus is a small community 40 minutes west of Katy, TX, situated on the Colorado River. The last census (2010) recorded the population at 3,655. With the growth of Houston/Katy west, Columbus has seen a definite growth and demand! With lower taxes than our cousins to the east, Columbus has had an increase in demand for homes, land and investment property.
Let me give you a little back history on the area. The first American settlers arrived in 1821 and by 1836, Beason’s Ferry Crossing was home to 25 families. During that time, Sam Houston and his men were camped on the Colorado River near Beason’s Crossing (located where Columbus is today) during the fight for Texas Independence. Had the stand been made at the river, things may just have turned out differently. Instead, the last stand was at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1837, Texas achieved her independence from Mexico and the European Americans established the town now known as Columbus.
Dr. James Wooten Jr. coined the motto of “Live Oaks and Live Folks,” which is fitting for a physician! An interesting note for bird lovers, with so many cardinals in this area, the ‘Columbus Cardinals’ were named by Dr. Wooten as the town mascot.(Beautiful Oak Trees at Beason’s Park, Image by Deanna Brabham, Broker/Owner)
Another interesting fact about Columbus are some of the notable people that lived in the area. Such as Tanya McQueen – television reality celeb of Extreme Makeover, Hal Smith – major league baseball catcher, James Truchard – entrepreneur, LaAdrian Waddle – NLF player, and the 3 TCU football stars that went on to pro football fame – Aaron Schobel (Buffalo Bills), Matt Schobel (Philadelphia Eagles) and Bo Schobel (Arizona Cardinals).
