Sealy

Welcome to the Sealy Community Page!

As Katy and Brookshire are steamrolling west, Sealy is the next stop on the I-10 energy corridor west!  Situated in Austin county and only 25 minutes from Katy, TX makes this area the next boom area.  The growth and demand is more than what is available on the market.  A positive for all investors and people wanting to relocate.  With lower taxes than our cousins to the east, Sealy has had an increase in demand for homes, land and investment property.

The historical back story of Sealy begins in the early 1820’s with the Mexican land grant to Moses Austin and implemented to his son Stephen F. Austin.  Sealy was actually founded in 1879 by George Sealy (President of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad) under that same land grant.  The area grew to be known as the railroad and farming center, and the division point between Galveston and Temple.

So was there really a Sealy Mattress in Sealy, Texas?  Why yes…there was.  In 1881, Daniel Haynes lived in Sealy.  He began making cotton-filled mattresses for friends and family.  Being an entrepreneur, he patented an invention that compressed cotton for mattresses.  Thru ups and downs, thick and thin, Sealy Mattress eventually was sold in 2012 to Tempur-Pedic International!

So coming to present time, it’s interesting to note that Sealy was acknowledged by Southern Economic Development, as polled by their members, as one of the top three ‘Best Places for Manufacturing” in the western Houston region!  That strong economy continues today with the upcoming and new businesses such as SNC-Lavalin, Sika Corporation to set up shop off of FM 3538, the West I-10 Industrial Park and expansion of Prasek’s Smokehouse.  Other major businesses in the area: Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Acme Brick, Gulf State Toyota, International Paper and Wal-Mart Super Center.

Another interesting fact about Sealy are some of the notable people that lived in the area.  Such as NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, Major League Baseball player Ernie Koy and Huey Long – singer with The Ink Spot!
